Seasonal parrot care: temperature, humidity, and airflow

What to check during seasonal changes and when using heating or air conditioning.

Measure conditions at cage height, where your bird actually spends time. The floor, wall, and cage can differ by several degrees.

Measure in the right place

Place the thermometer and humidity meter beside the cage at perch height. Check once during the coldest and warmest parts of the day.

  • Measure at cage height
  • Check early morning and midday
  • Compare curtains open and closed near windows

Heating and cooling

Redirect continuous airflow away from the cage. Heating can dry the air quickly, so check temperature and humidity together.

  • No direct air-conditioner or heater airflow
  • Monitor humidity while heating
  • Move your bird before strong ventilation
  • Keep cooking smoke and overheated-pan fumes away

Contact a clinic when changes continue

If unusual behavior continues after the environment is stabilized, contact a clinic that treats birds. This guide does not replace diagnosis or treatment.

Frequently asked questions

What winter temperature should I use?

There is no single number for every species, age, and history. Avoid sudden changes and ask your clinic for an individual range.

Can I put a humidifier next to the cage?

Keep mist from reaching the cage directly, and clean and dry the tank and surrounding area frequently.
