Change nothing in week one
Keep the same food, toys, and sleep hours the bird already knows. Changing several things at once makes it impossible to tell why a bird stopped eating.
If something must change, change one thing at a time and note the date.
- Keep the current food and treats
- Place the cage against a wall, away from foot traffic
- Write down the date of any change
- Leave handling until food and water are steady
Weight is a number, not a look
Feathers hide weight loss. A few grams matter on a bird this small, so weigh at a fixed time under the same conditions.
moimoi shows each bird's weight against a reference range for its species — 25-35g for budgerigars. Body size differs by individual, so the move away from your bird's own baseline matters more than the range itself.
Settling in is quiet
Signs come before talking or stepping up. Eating, drinking, preening, and resting on one foot while you are in the room all mean the environment is becoming familiar.
If the bird retreats whenever you approach, or eats less for several days, slow down.
- Eats and drinks while you are visible
- Preens and shakes out its feathers
- Rests on one foot
- Responds when called
Do more than record a concern
If appetite drops, weight keeps falling, or breathing and droppings look different, contact a clinic that treats birds instead of relying on articles. moimoi does not replace veterinary diagnosis or treatment.
